ते पश्यत सुतस्नेहो यादृश: पशुपक्षिणाम्‌ | न तेषां धारयित्वा तान्‌ कश्चिदस्ति फलागम:,“पशु और पक्षियोंका भी अपने बच्चेपर जैसा स्नेह होता है, उसे तुम देखो। यद्यपि स्नेहमें आसक्त उन पशु-पक्षी-कीट आदि प्राणियोंको अपने बच्चोंके पालन-पोषण करनेपर भी परलोकमें उनसे उस प्रकार कोई फल नहीं मिलता जैसे कि परलोककी गतिमें स्थित हुए मुनियोंको यज्ञादि क्रियासे मिलता है

te paśyata sutasneho yādṛśaḥ paśupakṣiṇām | na teṣāṃ dhārayitvā tān kaścid asti phalāgamaḥ ||

Bhishma berkata: “Perhatikanlah betapa besar kasih sayang terhadap anak wujud bahkan dalam kalangan binatang dan burung. Namun bagi makhluk-makhluk itu, sekadar menanggung dan membesarkan anak tidak membawa buah (ganjaran rohani) yang pasti di alam kemudian.”
