Sahadeva on Attachment (mamatā), ‘mameti/na mameti’, and the Middle Path of Conduct
बाहाद्रव्यविमुक्तस्य शारीरेष्वनुगृध्यत: । यो धर्मो यत् सुखं वा स्याद् द्विषतां तत् तथास्तु नः,बाहरी द्रव्योंसे दूर होकर दैहिक सुख-भोगोंमें आसक्त रहनेवालेको जो धर्म अथवा जो सुख प्राप्त होता हो, वह उस रूपमें हमारे शत्रुओंको ही मिले
bāhādravyavimuktasya śārīreṣv anugṛdhyataḥ | yo dharmo yat sukhaṃ vā syād dviṣatāṃ tat tathāstu naḥ ||
Sahadeva berkata: “Bagi orang yang telah menjauh daripada harta benda luaran namun masih melekat pada kenikmatan jasmani—apa jua ‘dharma’ atau kebahagiaan yang diperolehnya, biarlah itu, dalam bentuk yang sama, jatuh kepada musuh-musuh kita, bukan kepada kita.”
सहदेव उवाच
Detachment is incomplete if one abandons external wealth but remains attached to bodily enjoyments; such compromised ‘dharma’ and its pleasures are rejected as unworthy.
Sahadeva voices a moral stance: he refuses any benefit that comes from a hypocritical or partial renunciation, wishing that kind of ‘dharma’ and happiness to accrue only to adversaries, not to his own side.
