अर्थस्य रक्षणार्थाय परेषां धर्मकारणात्‌ | परंतु प्राण-संकटके समय, विवाहके अवसरपर, दूसरेके धनकी रक्षाके लिये तथा धर्मकी रक्षाके लिये असत्य बोला जा सकता है

arthasya rakṣaṇārthāya pareṣāṃ dharma-kāraṇāt | parantu prāṇa-saṅkaṭake samaye vivāha-ke avasarapar dvitīyasya dhanasya rakṣā-kṛte tathā dharmasya rakṣā-kṛte asatyaṃ vaktuṃ śakyate |

Bhishma mengajar bahawa berkata benar ialah kewajipan utama, namun dharma juga mengiktiraf pengecualian yang jarang dan terikat syarat. Apabila perlindungan harta diperlukan demi tujuan yang benar, apabila kebajikan orang lain yang berasaskan dharma terancam, dan khususnya pada saat bahaya maut, pada waktu perkahwinan, atau ketika menjaga harta orang lain serta keutuhan dharma itu sendiri, maka berkata tidak benar boleh dibenarkan. Inti etikanya bukan lesen untuk menipu, tetapi kelonggaran yang sangat sempit apabila memelihara nyawa dan dharma mengatasi kebenaran secara harfiah.
