Educational Q&A

The verse underscores the inevitability and totality of armed conflict once both sides commit to battle: each army organizes itself (vyūha) and advances from all directions. Implicitly, it reflects the kṣatriya-world’s emphasis on preparedness, discipline, and resolve in war—qualities that, when detached from dharma, also intensify destruction.

Sañjaya reports to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the Kauravas advanced from every side, intent on fighting; likewise, in that great engagement the Pāṇḍavas formed their own battle-array and charged the Kauravas from all directions, ready for combat.
