Even the gravest moral transgression is treated as leaving a real ethical stain (pāpman/brahmahatyā) that demands recognition and appropriate expiation; sacred discipline such as tīrtha-bathing is presented as a culturally sanctioned means of purification and moral restoration.
Vaiśampāyana tells the king that Indra, after coming to know a certain matter, went to that renowned tīrtha, bathed there, and thereby became free from the taint of brahmahatyā—citing a traditional report (kila) to validate the tīrtha’s purificatory power.
