Adhyāya 21 — Duryodhanasya bāṇavarṣaḥ

Duryodhana’s Arrow-Storm and the Dust-Obscured Engagements

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how a single arduous deed performed for comrades can transform collective morale. Ethically, it shows the battlefield tension between loyalty to one’s side (mutual well-wishing and solidarity) and the escalating harm that such valor can enable within war.

Kṛtavarman performs a difficult martial exploit that benefits the Kaurava forces—described in the surrounding narration as checking the advance of the formidable Pāṇḍava host. The Kaurava warriors, overjoyed, respond with a thunderous lion-like shout that echoes as if reaching the sky.
