Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Lament and Inquiry (Śalya-parva, Adhyāya 2)
The verse foregrounds yathātattva—truthful, exact narration—especially when recounting war and loss. It implies an ethical demand: even amid grief and partisanship, the account of destruction and death should be stated as it truly occurred.
The speaker Vaiśampāyana is asked to narrate the full, accurate story of the catastrophic slaughter of the Bharata/Kuru forces and, in particular, to describe the manner in which Duryodhana was killed on the battlefield.
