Duryodhana’s Final Condition, Lamentation, and the Night’s Report
धन्यस्त्वमसि गान्धारे यस्त्वमायोधने हत:
dhanyas tvam asi gāndhāre yas tvam āyodhane hataḥ
Sañjaya berkata: “Berbahagialah engkau, wahai Gāndhārī, kerana engkau telah gugur di medan perang.”
संजय उवाच
The verse reflects the epic’s martial ethic: dying in battle can be viewed as ‘fortunate’ because it aligns with the warrior code and spares one from the prolonged moral and emotional suffering that follows catastrophic violence.
Sañjaya addresses Gāndhārī and remarks that she is ‘blessed’ because she has been slain in battle—an utterance that functions as a grim consolation by interpreting battlefield death as honorable and as release amid the war’s devastating aftermath.
