When adharma gains ground in a public institution like the royal court, even the wise and powerful experience inner turmoil. The verse highlights the ethical weight of silence and complicity: the elders’ visible distress signals awareness that a boundary of dharma is being crossed.
In the wake of a grave and humiliating turn of events in the court, the entire assembly becomes unsettled. The kings grieve, and senior figures—Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and Kṛpa among others—begin to sweat, indicating fear, shame, and moral anxiety at what is unfolding.
