The verse underscores the overwhelming momentum of consequences in war: when destruction becomes inevitable, individual heroism can be rendered moot. It also highlights Bhīma’s decisive agency and the grim ethical atmosphere of Kurukṣetra, where victory is portrayed as the ‘swallowing’ of opponents by death-like force.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Arjuna (Dhanañjaya) seemingly has little left to fight, because Bhīma has already devastated the Kaurava forces—the Dhārtarāṣṭras—so thoroughly that they are described as already consumed.
