कर्णपर्व — अध्याय ४०
Karṇa’s Pressure on the Pāñcālas; Duryodhana Disabled; Arjuna’s Counter-Advance
यावद् गत्वा पतत्येष काको मामिति चिन्तयन् । चक्रांग कौएको लाँधकर आगे बढ़ चुका था तो भी यह सोचकर उसकी प्रतीक्षा करने लगा कि यह कौआ भी उड़कर मेरे पास आ जाय || ५० $ ।। ततः काको भृशं श्रान्तो हंसमभ्यागमत्तदा,तदनन्तर उस समय अत्यन्त थका-मादा कौआ हंसके समीप आया। हंसने देखा, कौएकी दशा बड़ी शोचनीय हो गयी है। अब यह पानीमें डूबनेहीवाला है। तब उसने सत्पुरुषोंके व्रतका स्मरण करके उसके उद्धारकी इच्छा मनमें लेकर इस प्रकार कहा
yāvad gatvā pataty eṣa kāko mām iti cintayan | cakrāṅgaḥ kaścid ālambhya agre baḍh cukā tha to 'pi evaṃ cintayitvā tasya pratīkṣām akarot—"ayaṃ kāko 'pi uḍḍīya mama samīpam āgamiṣyati" || tataḥ kāko bhṛśaṃ śrānto haṃsam abhyāgamat tadā |
Sang angsa berfikir, “Gagak ini juga akan terbang dan sampai kepadaku.” Maka, walaupun mampu meneruskan perjalanan, dia memilih untuk menunggu. Lalu gagak itu, amat letih, akhirnya mendekati angsa—dalam keadaan menyedihkan dan hampir tenggelam. Mengingati ikrar orang berbudi—melindungi dan tidak meninggalkan sesiapa yang memohon perlindungan—angsa itu berniat menyelamatkannya lalu berkata demikian.
