Karṇa’s Battle Formation and the Pāṇḍava Counter-Plan
Adhyāya 31
tvayi yantari rādheyo vidviṣo me vijeṣyate | abhīṣūṇāṁ hi karṇasya gṛhītānyo na vidyate ||
The verse highlights how victory in war depends not only on a hero’s valor but also on competent support—especially the charioteer’s skill in controlling the horses and positioning the warrior. It underscores the ethical realism of the epic: excellence is relational and coordinated, not merely individual.
Sañjaya reports a confident assessment that Karna (Rādheya) will defeat the opposing warriors if the addressed person serves as his charioteer, because no one else is capable of managing Karna’s reins—implying the extraordinary demands of Karna’s chariot and combat style.
