In the midst of catastrophic violence (janakṣaya), the verse foregrounds buddhi—clear discernment—and the need to decide the next right action. It highlights how leaders, when overwhelmed by crisis, must pause to evaluate consequences and strategy rather than act blindly from fear or haste.
Sañjaya tells the king that, as the battle turns dreadful and Arjuna becomes the urgent threat to be checked, a key Kaurava figure hastens in a single chariot to Droṇa, meets him, and begins to speak—setting up a strategic consultation aimed at stopping Arjuna.
