Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical gravity of war: when combat escalates into indiscriminate overwhelming force, the result is not glory but terror and suffering. It implicitly cautions that martial duty, if unmoored from restraint and discernment, becomes sheer destruction.

Sañjaya describes the Pāñcālas being surrounded and overwhelmed as arrows fall in dense volleys. Amid this slaughter, a frightening roar—of battle, pain, and chaos—rises across the field.
