विवृद्धस्तुमुल: शब्दो द्यामगच्छन्महांस्तदा । नानायुधनिकृत्तानां चेष्टतामातुर: स्वन:

vivṛddhas tumulaḥ śabdo dyām agacchan mahāṁs tadā | nānāyudha-nikṛttānāṁ ceṣṭatām āturaḥ svanaḥ ||

Sañjaya berkata: Pada waktu itu, raungan yang besar, kian membesar dan bergelora, naik hingga ke langit. Di bumi terdengar jerit pilu para pahlawan—ditumpaskan oleh pelbagai senjata—yang menggeliat dalam perjuangan terakhir. Pemandangan itu menampakkan kehancuran yang menyayat hati: askar berjalan kaki, kuda, kereta perang dan gajah, ada yang rebah dan ada yang direbahkan.
