Educational Q&A

The verse highlights a moral-psychological truth of warfare: when a force loses cohesion and confidence under decisive pressure, even a large army can collapse into flight. It implicitly stresses the ethical weight of leadership and morale—numbers alone do not sustain a cause when fear overwhelms discipline.

Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Arjuna is slaughtering the opposing warriors so effectively that the entire Kaurava host—identified as the forces of Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s sons—breaks formation and runs away.
