Dhṛṣṭadyumna’s advance toward Droṇa and the Sātyaki–Karṇa confrontation

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the primacy of keeping one’s solemn vow (pratijñā) even amid battlefield chaos, while also raising the ethical tension between protecting an ally and the norms of fair combat; it shows how actions taken for dharma can simultaneously alter who receives credit (yaśas) for a deed.

Sañjaya reports that Arjuna, noticing his ally in danger, intervened to uphold his pledge by severing Bhūriśravas’s sword-arm. Because of Arjuna’s intervention, the speaker says he was denied the opportunity and renown of killing Bhūriśravas himself.
