Educational Q&A

Within the Mahābhārata’s war narrative, the verse highlights the uncompromising demands of kṣatriya-duty in battle: victory is pursued by neutralizing the opponent’s ability to fight (horses, charioteer, and the warrior’s grip), while the ever-present reality of death is framed through Yama.

Sañjaya narrates that Bhīmasena strikes Karṇa effectively—cutting at the bow-hand/grip area—then kills Karṇa’s conch-white horses with arrows, and also kills the charioteer, knocking him down from the chariot-seat.
