Duryodhana’s Appeal to Karna — The Kripa–Karna Dialogue
sañjaya uvāca | yaṃ samāsādya putrair me kṛtaṃ vairaṃ mahārathaiḥ | taṃ sūta-tanayaṃ tāta kathaṃ bhīmo hy ayodhayat ||
The verse highlights how reliance on a single champion and social labels (like “sūta-tanaya”) shape political and ethical choices in war: Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s side stakes its feud on Karṇa’s support, while the narrative invites reflection on responsibility for enmity and the dangers of pride and dependence in adharma-driven conflict.
Sanjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra and frames a question about the battle: since the Kauravas have pursued hostility against the Pāṇḍavas relying on Karṇa, Dhṛtarāṣṭra asks how Bhīma engaged in combat with Karṇa—setting up the description of their encounter.
