Somadatta’s Kṣātra-Dharma Accusation; Night Combat, Māyā, and the Fall of Ghaṭotkaca
Droṇa-parva, Adhyāya 131
क्ुद्धस्य भीमसेनस्य मम पुत्रान् जिघांसतः । दुर्योधनहिते युक्ता: समतिष्ठन्त केडग्रत:,क्रोधमें भरकर मेरे पुत्रोंका वध करनेकी इच्छावाले भीमसेनके आगे दुर्योधनके हितमें तत्पर रहनेवाले कौन-कौन योद्धा खड़े हो सके?
krodhasya bhīmasenasya mama putrān jighāṃsataḥ | duryodhana-hite yuktāḥ samatiṣṭhanta ke 'grataḥ ||
Dhṛtarāṣṭra berkata: “Apabila Bhīmasena, menyala oleh amarah dan berniat membunuh anak-anakku, mara ke hadapan—siapakah para pahlawan yang mampu berdiri teguh di depannya, setia berjuang demi kepentingan Duryodhana?”
धघतयाट्र उवाच
The verse highlights how intense anger and the drive for vengeance can become a decisive force in war, while also exposing the moral tension between loyalty to a leader (Duryodhana) and the destructive consequences of that loyalty. It implicitly contrasts personal attachment (Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s concern for his sons) with the harsh realities of dharma in a battlefield context.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra questions Sañjaya about the battlefield: Bhīma, enraged and determined to kill Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s sons, is advancing, and Dhṛtarāṣṭra wants to know which Kaurava warriors, committed to Duryodhana’s cause, were able to stand in front of him and resist.
