Educational Q&A

Even in war, leadership is shown through restraint and regulation: a commander may order withdrawal or repositioning to maintain discipline, prevent chaos, and keep the battle within an intelligible order consistent with kṣatriya responsibility.

Sañjaya reports that after speaking to Droṇa, Bhīṣma—described as a mahāratha—causes the Kaurava troops to withdraw from the battlefield, indicating a tactical or disciplinary decision taken by the commander.
