Human beings follow different disciplines: some value regulated enjoyment such as eating, others value austerity like fasting; likewise, some uphold karma (active duty/ritual effort) while others uphold praśānti (the ideal of inner peace). The verse highlights plural approaches to spiritual and ethical life and prepares the ground for discerning which path suits a given seeker and context.
The Wind-god (Vāyu) is speaking and contrasts differing human preferences and ideals—food versus fasting, action versus tranquility—framing a discussion about conduct and spiritual orientation within the Ashvamedhika Parva’s reflective teachings.
