Discourse on Desire, Possessiveness, and Ritual Duty

इस प्रकार श्रीमह्याभारत आश्वमेधिकपर्वके अन्तर्गत अश्वमेधपर्वमें श्रीकृष्ण और युधिषछिरका संवादविषयक बारहवाँ अध्याय पूरा हुआ

atra gāthāḥ kāmagītāḥ kīrtayanti purāvidaḥ | śṛṇu saṅkīrtyamānās tā akhilena yudhiṣṭhira | nāhaṃ śakyo'nupāyena hantuṃ bhūtena kenacit ||

Vāyu berkata: “Tentang hal ini, para cendekia yang mengetahui adat purba melagukan bait-bait lama yang dikenali sebagai ‘Nyanyian Kāma’. Dengarlah, wahai Yudhiṣṭhira, ketika aku melafazkannya kepadamu dengan lengkap: ‘Tanpa jalan yang benar, tiada makhluk dapat memusnahkan aku.’” Di sini Kāma (nafsu/keinginan) menegaskan bahawa ia tidak dapat ditundukkan dengan kekerasan atau usaha biasa; hanya kaedah yang berdisiplin—ditandai oleh pelepasan batin dan amalan yoga—mampu membawa penguasaan atasnya.

Educational Q&A

Desire (Kāma) is not conquered by brute suppression or ordinary effort; it yields only to a ‘proper method’—disciplined inner practice, especially detachment and yogic restraint—so that the mind no longer feeds it.

Vāyu addresses Yudhiṣṭhira and introduces an ancient set of traditional stanzas called the Kāmagītāḥ. He begins the recitation with Kāma’s own claim that no creature can destroy it unless one adopts the true means of overcoming it.
