Educational Q&A

Austerity (tapas) is presented as a purifying force: moral taints (kilbiṣa) can be ‘burned away’ through disciplined spiritual practice, enabling a higher state of being and access to exalted realms.

Nārada informs the king that he has repeatedly seen a particular royal sage while traveling, and that this king, purified by tapas, resides in Indra’s abode and continues ascetic practice there.
