Puṣkara-Śapatha Itihāsa (Agastya–Indra Dispute at the Tīrthas) | पुष्कर-शपथ-आख्यानम्
भीष्म उवाच अन्तरा सायमाशं च प्रातराशं च यो नर: । सदोपवासी भवति यो न भुंक्तेडन्तरा पुन:
bhīṣma uvāca antarā sāyamāśaṃ ca prātarāśaṃ ca yo naraḥ | sadopavāsī bhavati yo na bhuṅkte’ntarā punaḥ ||
Bhīṣma berkata: “Sesiapa yang tidak makan apa-apa di antara makan malam dan makan pagi, pada hakikatnya menjadi seorang yang sentiasa berpuasa—kerana dia tidak mengambil makanan lagi dalam sela waktu itu.”
भीष्म उवाच
Regular restraint—avoiding food between the evening and morning meals—is praised as a sustained form of fasting, emphasizing self-control and disciplined living as dharmic practice.
Bhishma, instructing on dharma and observances, defines a practical daily rule of eating: one who does not snack or eat again between the two main meals is regarded as continually observing a fast.
