कुरुकुलका भार वहन करनेवाले पितामह! मैं आपके मुखसे यह तारक-वधका सम्पूर्ण वृत्तान्त सुनना चाहता हूँ। इसके लिये मेरे मनमें बड़ा कौतूहल है ।। भीष्म उवाच विपन्नकृत्या राजेन्द्र देवता ऋषयस्तथा । कृत्तिकाश्नोदयामासुरपत्यभरणाय वै,भीष्मजीने कहा--राजेन्द्र! जब गंगाजीने अग्नि-द्वारा स्थापित किये हुए उस गर्भको त्याग दिया, तब देवताओं और ऋषियोंका बना-बनाया काम बिगड़तेकी स्थितिमें आ गया। उस दशामें उन्होंने उस गर्भके भरण-पोषणके लिये छहों कृत्तिकाओंको प्रेरित किया

Transliteration

Bhīṣma uvāca: Vipannakṛtyā rājendra devatā ṛṣayas tathā | Kṛttikāś codayāmāsur apatya-bharaṇāya vai ||

Translation

Bhishma berkata: “Wahai raja, ketika usaha mereka jatuh ke dalam bahaya dan hampir gagal, para dewa dan para resi mendesak enam Kṛttikā agar memikul tugas memelihara anak itu, supaya tujuan yang telah ditetapkan tidak musnah.”
