मनुष्य इहलोक और परलोकमें अपने कर्मके अनुसार ही जीवन-निर्वाह करते हैं। भूमि ऐश्वर्यस्वरूपा महादेवी है। वह दाताको अपना प्रिय बना लेती है ।। य एतां दक्षिणां दद्यादक्षयां राजसत्तम । पुनर्नरित्वं सम्प्राप्य भवेत्‌ स पृथिवीपति:,नृपश्रेष्ठी जो इस अक्षय भूमिका दान करता है वह दूसरे जन्ममें मनुष्य होकर पृथ्वीका स्वामी होता है

yā etāṁ dakṣiṇāṁ dadyād akṣayāṁ rājasattama | punar naritvaṁ samprāpya bhavet sa pṛthivīpatiḥ ||

Bhishma berkata: “Wahai raja yang terbaik, sesiapa yang mengurniakan sedekah yang tidak susut ini—tanah, Sang Mahadewi yang menjelmakan kemakmuran—akan meraih perkenannya. Setelah memperoleh kelahiran sebagai manusia sekali lagi, si pemberi itu menjadi penguasa bumi.”
