तव पुत्रा दुरात्मान: क्रोधलो भपरायणा: । ईर्ष्याभि भूता दुर्वत्तास्तानू न शोचितुमहसि,तुम्हारे पुत्र बड़े दुरात्मा, क्रोधी, लोभी, ईष्यके वशीभूत तथा दुराचारी थे। अतः उनके लिये तुम्हें शोक नहीं करना चाहिये
tava putrā durātmānaḥ krodha-lobha-parāyaṇāḥ | īrṣyābhibhūtā durvṛttās tān na śocitum arhasi ||
Bhīṣma berkata: “Anak-anakmu berwatak jahat—menyerah kepada kemarahan dan ketamakan, dikuasai iri hati, serta rosak akhlaknya. Oleh itu, engkau tidak patut berdukacita atas mereka.”
भीष्म उवाच
Bhīṣma links grief and moral responsibility: when ruin follows sustained anger, greed, jealousy, and misconduct, one should recognize the ethical causes and restrain misplaced lamentation, turning instead toward discernment and dharmic reflection.
In Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma instructs the elders on dharma. Here he addresses Dhṛtarāṣṭra, characterizing his sons as dominated by destructive vices and advising him not to mourn them, since their fate is presented as the consequence of their own conduct.
