(पुरा युगान्तरे यत्नादमृतार्थ सुरासुरै: । बलवद्धिविमथितश्चिरकालं महोदधि: ।।

purā yugāntare yatnād amṛtārthaṁ surāsuraiḥ | balavaddhi vimathitaś cirakālaṁ mahodadhiḥ ||

Mahādeva bersabda: “Pada suatu kitaran zaman yang lampau, para dewa dan asura, bersungguh-sungguh dengan usaha yang besar demi memperoleh amṛta—nektar keabadian—telah mengaduk samudera raya untuk waktu yang lama. Ketika lautan besar itu dikocak dengan Gunung Mandara sebagai penggiling dan Vāsuki, raja naga, sebagai talinya, muncullah racun yang mengerikan, pemusnah segala dunia. Melihatnya, para dewa pun menjadi muram. Wahai Dewi, demi kesejahteraan tiga alam, akulah yang meneguk racun itu. Maka pada leherku tampak tanda kebiruan laksana bulu merak; sejak saat itu aku dikenang sebagai Nīlakaṇṭha. Segala ini telah kukatakan kepadamu—apa lagi yang ingin engkau dengar?”
