भीष्म उवाच शृणुष्वावहितो राजन्‌ धर्मगुह्दानि भारत । यथा हि भगवान्‌ व्यास: पुरा कथितवान्‌ मयि,भीष्मजीने कहा--राजन्‌! भरतनन्दन! पूर्वकालमें भगवान्‌ वेदव्यासने मुझे धर्मके जो गूढ़ रहस्य बताये थे, उनका वर्णन करता हूँ, सावधान होकर सुनो

bhīṣma uvāca śṛṇuṣvāvahito rājan dharma-gūḍhāni bhārata | yathā hi bhagavān vyāsaḥ purā kathitavān mayi ||

Bhīṣma berkata: “Wahai Raja, wahai keturunan Bharata, dengarlah dengan penuh perhatian. Aku akan menceritakan selok-belok dharma yang tersembunyi, sebagaimana Vyāsa yang mulia dahulu mengajarkannya kepadaku.”
