Conduct of the Virtuous Wife

न वृत्तं मन्यते तस्य मन्‍्यते न च पातकम्‌ | तथा स्वकर्मनिर्वत्तं न पुण्यंन च पापकम्‌,ब्रह्मनिष्ठ पुरुष कर्तापनके अभिमानसे रहित होता है। अतः उसके किये हुए कर्मको न पुण्य माना जाता है न पाप। उसे अपने कर्मजनित पुण्य और पापकी प्राप्ति होती ही नहीं है

na vṛttaṁ manyate tasya manyate na ca pātakam | tathā svakarmanirvṛttaṁ na puṇyaṁ na ca pāpakam ||

Vyāsa berkata: Bagi orang itu, tiada perbuatan yang dianggap sebagai “pahala”, dan tiada pula yang dianggap sebagai “dosa”. Demikian juga, tindakan yang lahir daripada tugasnya yang ditetapkan (dharma dirinya) tidak menjadi baik atau jahat baginya. Teguh dalam Brahman dan bebas daripada keangkuhan sebagai pelaku, dia tidak mengumpul buah pahala dan dosa yang lahir daripada perbuatan.

A person established in Brahman and free from the ego of doership is not bound by action: his deeds are not counted as merit or sin, because the binding factor—self-centered agency and attachment to results—has been dissolved.
