Bṛhaspati–Yudhiṣṭhira Saṃvāda
तीर्थशौचमनर्थित्वमार्जवं सत्यमार्दवम् अहिंसा सर्वभूतानामानृशंस्यं दम: शम:,कामना और याचनाका अभाव, सरलता, सत्य, मृदुता, अहिंसा, समस्त प्राणियोंके प्रति क्रूरताका अभाव--दया, इन्द्रियसंयम और मनोनिग्रह--ये ही इस मानस तीर्थके सेवनसे प्राप्त होनेवाली पवित्रताके लक्षण हैं
bhīṣma uvāca | tīrtha-śaucam anarthitvam ārjavaṁ satyam ārdavam | ahiṁsā sarva-bhūtānām ānṛśaṁsyaṁ damaḥ śamaḥ || kāmanā-yācanayor abhāvaḥ saralatā satyaṁ mṛdutā ahiṁsā samasta-prāṇiṣu krūratābhāvaḥ (dayā) indriya-saṁyamaḥ mano-nigrahaś ca—etāni eva asya mānasa-tīrthasya sevanena prāptāyāḥ pavitratāyāḥ lakṣaṇāni ||
Bhishma berkata: “Kesucian di tīrtha itu sesungguhnya dicapai melalui kebajikan batin: bebas daripada keinginan dan meminta-minta, kelurusan hati, kebenaran, kelembutan, ahimsa terhadap semua makhluk, belas kasihan (tanpa kekejaman), pengekangan indera, dan penguasaan minda. Inilah tanda-tanda kesucian yang diperoleh dengan bersandar pada ‘tīrtha batin’ ini.”
भीष्म उवाच
True purification is primarily inner: integrity, truth, gentleness, non-violence, compassion, and disciplined senses and mind constitute the real ‘tīrtha’ (pilgrimage) and its fruit.
In Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma instructs on dharma; here he reframes pilgrimage and ritual purity by emphasizing moral and psychological virtues as the defining signs of genuine sanctity.
