Educational Q&A

Sustained self-discipline—specifically, the long-term observance of a regular fasting vow—generates great merit and is presented as a powerful dharmic practice leading to an exalted posthumous state (uttama svarga).

In Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction on dharma, Bhīṣma is enumerating the fruits of particular vows and austerities; here he states the specific result of observing a monthly fast continuously for ten years.
