अभिमानेन भूतानामिमां गतिमुपागतम्‌ | आप मेरे इस पापी कुत्तेको देखिये, यह कान्तिहीन, सफेद और दुर्बल हो गया है। यह पहले मनुष्य था। परंतु समस्त प्राणियोंके प्रति अभिमान रखनेके कारण इस दुर्गतिको प्राप्त हुआ है

abhimānena bhūtānām imāṁ gatim upāgatam | paśyata me imaṁ pāpīṁ śvānam, kāntihīnaṁ śvetam durbalaṁ ca | eṣa pūrvaṁ manuṣya āsīt | sarvabhūteṣu abhimānaṁ kṛtvā asyāṁ durgatau prāptaḥ ||

Cāṇḍāla itu berkata: “Kerana kesombongan terhadap segala makhluk bernyawa, dia sampai kepada keadaan ini. Lihatlah anjingku yang malang ini—tiada seri, pucat, dan lemah. Dahulu dia seorang manusia. Namun kerana menyimpan keangkuhan terhadap semua makhluk, dia jatuh ke dalam nasib yang hina ini.”
