Mukti-tattva Upadeśa: Knowledge as the Direct Cause of Liberation

मुक्तिदा गुरुवागेका विद्याः सर्वा विडम्बिकाः / शास्त्रभारसहस्रेषु ह्येकं सञ्जीवनं परम्

muktidā guruvāgekā vidyāḥ sarvā viḍambikāḥ / śāstrabhārasahasreṣu hyekaṃ sañjīvanaṃ param

Satu ucapan Guru sahaja menganugerahkan pembebasan; segala ilmu lain hanyalah sandiwara. Di tengah ribuan beban śāstra, ada satu ajaran tertinggi yang menghidupkan—itulah yang paling utama.

Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vainateya)

Concept: A single authentic guru-vākya can grant liberation; vast learning without realization is performative; among countless scriptures, one supreme upadeśa is life-giving.

Vedantic Theme: Mahāvākya/upadeśa as direct pointer to Self; grace (anugraha) through guru; condensation of śāstra into essence (sāra).

Application: Seek concise, lived instruction from a realized teacher; practice one core teaching deeply rather than collecting endless information.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Related Themes: Garuda Purana 2.49.85-88 (śāstra as means; jñāna alone liberates)

FAQs

This verse states that a single, authentic instruction from the Guru can directly lead to liberation, whereas mere accumulation of learning without inner transformation becomes empty display.

In the Preta Kanda’s broader aim of guiding the soul beyond fear and bondage, the verse highlights that the decisive factor is not the sheer volume of texts or rites, but the essence—right knowledge received and realized—leading to moksha.

Prioritize one clear, lived teaching—ethical discipline, remembrance of the Divine, and self-inquiry—under a competent guide, rather than chasing endless information without practice.
