Related Themes: Garuda Purana Pretakalpa: repeated assurances that śravaṇa-kīrtana and nāma-smaraṇa mitigate yātanā and papa (general internal motif)
This verse states that śravaṇa (hearing) and kīrtana (recitation) of the teaching itself becomes a purifier, removing sin and helping one avoid fearful punishments described for the afterlife.
It implies that karmic consequences can be mitigated through purifying spiritual acts—here, hearing/reciting sacred instruction—so the jīva is not dragged into harsh yātanās and instead proceeds to higher realms (diva).
Regularly listen to or recite spiritually elevating texts with sincerity, and pair it with ethical living; the verse emphasizes inner purification and reduced karmic burden through disciplined remembrance and proclamation of dharma.
