Bumi, air, api—pemakan havis (persembahan), angin dan ruang: oleh unsur-unsur ini makhluk itu disakiti; terikat kuat oleh ikatan urat dan tendon, ia tetap terkungkung.
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: The embodied being is constituted and pressured by the five elements and bound by bodily tissues; suffering arises from identification with this compound.
Vedantic Theme: Anatma-viveka (discrimination of non-Self); prakriti’s gunas/elements bind the jiva through the body.
Application: Practice detachment and mindful care of the body without self-identification; reflect on impermanence and composite nature to reduce ego-clinging.
Primary Rasa: karuna
Secondary Rasa: bibhatsa
Type: microcosmic bodily realm
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 2.32 (continuation of garbha-vastha and panchabhuta exposition)
This verse frames post-death experience as conditioned by the elemental constituents—earth, water, fire, wind, and space—showing how embodied existence (even in a preta-state) remains subject to elemental pressures and constraints.
It indicates that the departed being is not immediately free; it is ‘bound’ and ‘afflicted’ through elemental forces and bodily bindings, aligning with the Preta Kanda theme that the jīva’s journey involves a subtle/liminal embodiment before final adjudication and onward movement.
Live with restraint and dharma, remembering that attachment to bodily identity binds; and when following tradition, perform death rites and offerings with clarity of intent, as they symbolically address the elemental constitution and the departed one’s transition.
