This verse states that offering salt when the prāṇas are departing is a meritorious deathbed observance, symbolically described as ‘opening the gate of heaven’—an act meant to support an auspicious transition.
By linking a simple rite at prāṇa-departure with ‘the opening of the heavenly gate,’ the verse frames deathbed conduct as influencing the immediate spiritual passage, aligning the dying person’s transition with auspicious higher realms.
Maintain calm, dharmic support at the bedside and follow one’s tradition for end-of-life observances; this verse highlights timely, focused rites (here, giving salt) performed with intention during prāṇa-departure.
