Preta-Mokṣa Upāya: Svapna-Lakṣaṇa, Pitṛ-Doṣa, and Prescribed Rites
Kṛṣṇa-bali & Nārāyaṇa-bali
न स्वप्नश्चैष्टितं नैव दर्शनं न कदाचन / किं कर्तव्यं सुरश्रेष्ठ तत्र मे ब्रूहि निश्चितम्
na svapnaścaiṣṭitaṃ naiva darśanaṃ na kadācana / kiṃ kartavyaṃ suraśreṣṭha tatra me brūhi niścitam
Tiada mimpi, tiada tanda yang ditunjukkan, dan tiada penglihatan pada bila-bila masa. Wahai yang terbaik antara para dewa, katakanlah kepadaku dengan pasti apa yang harus dilakukan dalam hal ini.
Garuda (Vinata-putra) addressing Lord Vishnu
Concept: When omens are absent, right action should be grounded in authoritative instruction rather than chasing signs.
Vedantic Theme: Turn from external uncertainty to inner/śāstric guidance; surrender (śaraṇāgati) as a stabilizing principle.
Application: Seek competent spiritual counsel; follow prescribed shanti/shraddha or devotional remedies based on dharma, not solely on dreams/visions.
Primary Rasa: bhayanaka
Secondary Rasa: karuna
Related Themes: Garuda Purana dialogic passages where Garuda asks procedural ‘what should be done’ questions and Vishnu prescribes remedies (general internal parallel)
This verse highlights a common uncertainty: when no dream, vision, or omen is received about the departed, one should still seek and follow clear dharmic instruction rather than rely on signs.
By stressing that dreams or visions may not occur, it implies the soul’s post-death journey is not always perceptible to the living; therefore, prescribed rites and guidance (as taught by Vishnu) are relied upon to support the departed.
Do not postpone duty waiting for “signs”; perform appropriate ancestral and death-related rites with faith and clarity, and seek learned guidance for correct observance.
