Humility, Surrender, and the Power of the Name
Garuda (Vinata-putra), addressing Lord Vishnu
Concept: Krishna-vimukhatā (turning away from the Lord) aligns with apuṇya conduct and yields duḥkha through one’s own karma; boons should not reinforce adharma.
Vedantic Theme: Karma-bandha through avidyā and bhagavad-vimukhatā; bhakti as the corrective orientation; ethical discernment in dispensing grace.
Application: Do not enable harmful patterns; prioritize spiritual alignment over appeasing demands; encourage reorientation toward devotion and ethical living as the remedy for suffering.
Primary Rasa: raudra
Secondary Rasa: karuna
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: repeated warnings that adharma leads to suffering; bhagavad-bhakti as purifier (general internal thematic link)
This verse frames devotion as the highest priority—service to the Lord’s lotus feet—implying that turning away from Krishna leads to karmically produced misery and spiritual decline.
It explicitly links suffering to one’s own karma: a person averse to Krishna and given to impious conduct becomes “greatly afflicted” as a direct result of actions performed.
Cultivate daily devotion and ethical conduct (puṇya) and avoid harmful actions; the verse advises that inner orientation to Krishna and righteous living reduce self-created suffering.
