Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinatā-putra)

Concept: Even intimacy with a teacher must be free from deceit; emotional volatility in the disciple and guile in the teacher corrupt the relationship.

Vedantic Theme: Antaḥkaraṇa-śuddhi as prerequisite for knowledge; doṣa (krodha, māna, māyā) obstructs tattva-jñāna.

Application: Maintain respectful warmth without sarcasm or manipulation; cultivate emotional regulation as a student and transparency as a teacher.

Primary Rasa: hasya

Secondary Rasa: shanta

FAQs

This verse frames the teacher–disciple bond as dharmic discipline: even friendly joking must be free of contempt or deceit, otherwise learning and spiritual progress are harmed.

By warning against harṣa (excess elation), amarṣa (resentment), and kauṭilya (guile), it points to mental purity and straightforwardness as prerequisites for receiving and transmitting sacred knowledge.

Keep humor respectful, avoid sarcasm that belittles, and practice emotional restraint; a student should not react from pride or irritation, and a teacher should avoid manipulation or favoritism.
