आयुर्गतं व्यर्थमेव त्वदीयं शीघ्रं भजेः श्रीनिवासस्य पादम् / उपदिश्यैवं मातरं पुत्रवर्यो दैत्यावेशात्सोभवद्वै तपस्वी
āyurgataṃ vyarthameva tvadīyaṃ śīghraṃ bhajeḥ śrīnivāsasya pādam / upadiśyaivaṃ mātaraṃ putravaryo daityāveśātsobhavadvai tapasvī
“Usiamu berlalu sia-sia. Segeralah berlindung pada kaki Śrīnivāsa (Viṣṇu).” Setelah menasihati ibunya demikian, putera yang unggul itu—oleh pengaruh menguasai seorang daitya (kuasa demon/kerasukan)—benar-benar menjadi seorang tapasvī (pertapa).
Narrator (Purāṇic narrative voice within Garuda Purana; not direct Vishnu–Garuda dialogue in this verse)
Concept: Life is fleeting; quickly take refuge at Srinivasa’s feet; instruction (upadeśa) catalyzes renunciation.
Vedantic Theme: Kṣaṇikatva (impermanence) prompting vairāgya; śaraṇāgati to the Lord’s feet as the stable ground.
Application: Regularly reflect on mortality to prioritize devotion; seek/offer wise counsel within family; convert urgency into concrete practice (prayer, service, ethical living).
Primary Rasa: karuna
Secondary Rasa: vira
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: exhortations on time’s passage and urgency of devotion (general theme)
This verse stresses spiritual urgency: human life quickly slips away, so one should promptly seek Viṣṇu’s refuge rather than let time be wasted in fruitless pursuits.
It frames the core preparation as devotion and right orientation in life: turning the mind toward Viṣṇu now is presented as the decisive step, more valuable than delaying until crisis or death approaches.
Treat time as sacred: begin regular bhakti (nāma-japa, prayer, temple worship, or reading), and give timely guidance to family toward dharma instead of postponing spiritual practice.
