Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vinata-putra in Preta Kanda discourse)

Concept: Lavish honor to family/friends while neglecting Hari’s lotus-feet leads to dreadful attachment; true reverence should be directed to the divine.

Vedantic Theme: Vairāgya and right-ordering of love: shifting from transient supports to the eternal (nitya) refuge; bhakti as the stable center.

Application: Care for family without idolizing them; establish daily worship/namasmarana; practice offering relationships to God (īśvara-arpana) to reduce clinging.

Primary Rasa: karuna

Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka

Related Themes: Garuda Purana 3.21.5–3.21.6: neglect of Mukunda-mantra and Hari-nāma; here, neglect of worship and pranāma to Hari.

FAQs

This verse teaches that devotion directed to Hari is spiritually protective, while prioritizing honor toward worldly relations over Hari becomes a cause of dread, especially in the after-death context emphasized in the Preta Kanda.

In the Preta Kanda’s framework, the soul’s journey is shaped by inner orientation: if reverence is fixed on transient supports (sons, friends), fear and helplessness arise; devotion to Hari is presented as the steadier refuge during post-death transitions.

Maintain devotion and daily remembrance of Vishnu alongside family duties—do not replace spiritual refuge with dependence on social ties, and cultivate detachment so the mind remains steady at life’s end.
