Lord Vishnu (teaching Garuda/Vinata-putra)

Concept: Adhikāra-bheda: those fit for mokṣa are aligned with a consciousness-character adjunct; those fit for tamas are aligned with a suffering-character adjunct—indicating the quality of identification shapes destiny.

Vedantic Theme: Sattva-oriented antahkaraṇa as fit instrument for knowledge; tamasic identification yields bondage and duḥkha.

Application: Cultivate sattva (clarity) through ethical living, study, and meditation; notice when identity is built around pain and reorient toward witness-consciousness.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: karuna

FAQs

This verse explains that the soul’s experience depends on the conditioning adjunct: a consciousness-oriented upādhi supports liberation, while a suffering-oriented upādhi aligns one with tamas and bondage.

It frames the soul’s trajectory in terms of qualification (adhikāra): those oriented to clear awareness move toward moksha, whereas those dominated by tamas tend toward suffering and continued bondage.

Cultivate sattvic clarity—study, ethical conduct, and meditation—to weaken tamas; this shifts one’s inner conditioning away from suffering and toward liberation-oriented understanding.
