On the Causes/Means of Knowledge
Lord Vishnu (Hari) speaking to Garuda (Vinata-putra)
Concept: Even Brahma cannot fully grasp the svarupa of Lakshmi and Hari; Veda gives only partial, proportionate access to their forms/nature.
Vedantic Theme: Acintyatva/anirvacaniyatva of Bhagavan and Shakti; aparoksha not exhausted by conceptual knowledge; pramana-limited cognition.
Application: Cultivate epistemic humility; study Veda/shastra as a guiding ‘portion’ while accepting that the divine exceeds total intellectual capture.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana (Brahma’s tapas and Vishnu’s revelation sequence continuing in 3.12.9–12)
The verse states that even Brahmā cannot fully know the divine reality, so reliable knowledge of Lakṣmī and Hari must be approached through the Vedas—at least partially—rather than through speculation.
It emphasizes that the complete svarūpa (essential nature) of Lakṣmī and Hari is beyond total comprehension; the Vedas provide a valid but necessarily partial window into their forms and nature.
Rely on disciplined study of scripture and humble devotion (rather than certainty or pride in one’s opinions) when forming beliefs about God and spiritual practice.
