Ruci and the Pitṛs: On Marriage, Debts (Ṛṇa), and Desireless Karma
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vainateya)
Concept: Karma is depleted (kshiyate) through the inevitable fruition of pleasure and pain; both punya and papa are worked off via experience.
Vedantic Theme: Prarabdha-karma as the operative residue that ripens as sukha-duhkha; endurance with discernment supports inner purification.
Application: Meet pleasure and pain with steadiness; interpret experiences as karmic fruition rather than personal injustice; reduce fresh karma by ethical action and non-reactivity.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: karuna

This verse states that accumulated past karma does not remain static—it is steadily consumed through lived experiences, especially pleasure and pain, which “work off” both merit and demerit.
It frames happiness (sukha) and suffering (duḥkha) as the concrete modes through which earlier puṇya and pāpa ripen and are gradually depleted.
Meet pleasure and pain with steadiness: treat them as karmic results, avoid creating fresh harm, and cultivate dharmic actions that purify future outcomes.
