Hayagrīva Pūjāvidhi: Root Mantra, Nyāsa, Maṇḍala-Devatā Worship, and Stotra
देवं संस्थाप्य विधिवद्वस्त्रं दद्याद्वृषध्वज / ततो ह्याचमनं दद्यादुपवीतं ततः शुभम्
devaṃ saṃsthāpya vidhivadvastraṃ dadyādvṛṣadhvaja / tato hyācamanaṃ dadyādupavītaṃ tataḥ śubham
Setelah menegakkan dewa menurut tatacara, pemuja hendaklah mempersembahkan kain. Kemudian persembahkan air ācamana; sesudah itu berikan upavīta, benang suci yang membawa keberkatan.
Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda)
Concept: Worship is governed by vidhi (proper rule); honoring the deity with appropriate offerings cultivates inner discipline and sacred regard.
Vedantic Theme: Karma-yoga orientation: right action offered to Īśvara purifies the doer; external order supports internal order.
Application: Follow a clear, respectful sequence in worship; let ‘offering’ include ethical self-adornment—clean conduct, restraint, and sincerity.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Type: shrine/altar
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.34.29-32 (preceding invocation, dhyāna, mudrā, water offerings, bathing)
This verse presents a sequential puja protocol: after establishing the deity, offering cloth honors and ‘clothes’ the divine form, ācamana completes ritual purification/refreshment, and upavīta signifies auspiciousness and adherence to dharmic order.
Even when the text discusses major themes like karma and post-death rites elsewhere, it repeatedly stresses that right procedure (vidhi) in worship and offerings sustains dharma; this verse is a compact example of that ritual precision.
When performing puja, follow a clear, respectful order: establish the deity/image properly, make appropriate offerings (like clean cloth), and include purification acts (ācamana) and auspicious observances (upavīta) according to one’s tradition and eligibility.
