One-Year Concluding Rite
Lord Vishnu
Ritual Type: Sapindana
Beneficiary: Pitr
Timing: Doctrinal summation after teaching sapiṇḍīkaraṇa procedure; frames the rite’s meaning and fruit.
Concept: Viṣṇu is the rite, the doer, and the fruit—reframing śrāddha as Hari-arpaṇa and Hari-prasāda.
Vedantic Theme: Īśvara-sarvātmakatva (the Lord as the inner reality of action and result); karma offered to Viṣṇu becomes purifying and supportive of mokṣa (karma-yoga/bhakti synthesis).
Application: Perform śrāddha with Viṣṇu-bhāva: dedicate the act to Hari, see the officiant/recipient as Viṣṇu’s form, and accept the outcome as Hari’s grace rather than mere transactional merit.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Type: scriptural-teaching-setting
Related Themes: Transition from śrāddha-vidhi to theological framing in the same section; links to later Garuda Purana bhakti/mokṣa teachings (general)
This verse frames sapiṇḍīkaraṇa as an authoritative rite (as taught by Vyāsa) that ritually integrates the departed into the ancestral continuum, while emphasizing that its ultimate sanctity and efficacy rest in Viṣṇu.
The verse explicitly identifies Viṣṇu/Hari as the śrāddha itself, the performer, and the fruit—teaching that the rite’s outcome is ultimately granted by Hari, beyond the external mechanics of the ritual.
Perform śrāddha and related rites with devotion and ethical integrity, remembering that sincerity, dharma, and Viṣṇu-centered intention are presented here as the core of the rite’s spiritual effectiveness.
