Visarpa Nidāna-Lakṣaṇa
Causes, Types, and Prognosis of Rapidly Spreading Eruptive Disorders
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Visarpa is defined by vyāpti (spreading); the locus it enters becomes the locus of suffering—emphasizing progression and localization.
Vedantic Theme: Kārya-kāraṇa observation: effects follow conditions; where the cause (doṣa-driven spread) goes, the effect manifests—inviting disciplined attention to change over time.
Application: Track the direction and regions of spread; early containment and region-specific care are crucial, since involvement of new areas predicts new impairment.
Primary Rasa: bhayanaka
Secondary Rasa: raudra
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.163.9 (defining feature of visarpa: spreading; ember-simile for burning sensation)
This verse defines visarpa by its hallmark—rapid spreading and intense burning—helping readers identify a dangerous, progressive condition rather than a localized rash.
The focus is not the soul’s post-death journey but the lived experience of suffering in the body; the Purana here teaches recognition of affliction so one can respond responsibly and preserve strength for dharma.
If a painful, burning lesion spreads from one area to another, treat it as urgent and seek timely care rather than waiting for it to “settle.”
