Nidāna of Mūtraghāta and Aśmarī: Doṣa-based Types, Signs, and Named Urinary Syndromes
Lord Vishnu (in discourse to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Dosha: Vata
Concept: Classification of a painful urinary ‘knot’ and explanation of vata-driven displacement of semen after urination and intercourse.
Vedantic Theme: Prakriti-guna/vikara: bodily functions are governed by doshas; misgovernance yields disorder—prompting detachment and disciplined living.
Application: Recognize severe knot-like pain as a distinct condition; avoid strain/sexual activity when symptomatic; address vata aggravation clinically.
Primary Rasa: bibhatsa
Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.158: granthi/ashmari-like urinary pain; vata causing upward movement (udavarta-like dynamics) and aberrant shukra movement
This verse defines mūtra-granthi as a painful, obstructive “knot” in the urinary system and links its mechanism to vāyu (vāta), showing the Purana also preserves technical medical descriptions alongside spiritual teaching.
It portrays vāyu as an internal force that can move bodily fluids upward or out of their normal course—here affecting śukra—consistent with vāta-driven displacement described in traditional Ayurvedic physiology.
Treat the verse as a caution about urogenital strain and vāta-aggravating habits; maintain disciplined conduct, avoid rushing bodily urges, and seek qualified medical guidance for urinary pain or obstruction.
